Why science communication is important.

The following excerpt is my personal statement upon applying to the UCSB 2023 Professional Writing Minor Cohort. The application process was highly competitive and I want to remind myself of the reason I write and give myself a space to reflect on the opportunity the Science Communication track has given me.

My generation is the one that must make changes and better the ways in which we communicate the news and advancements of science, and I want to be on the forefront of this movement. Whether it is dealing with medical decisions, environmental issues, or discoveries in space, it is important that the general public receives this information in a timely and digestible manner. My career goal is to help companies publish this information with transparency and honesty. Much of my studies and projects have focused on learning about environmental issues, primarily within the fashion industry, and applying my Communication training into spreading awareness on this topic through mass media to explain how we as consumers can help put an end to the problem. My goal is to work in the fashion industry, specifically in the environmental sector, and help them share their environmental progress. This is often done through annual reports, research and investigation, campaigns, website postings and social media. Additionally, I would like to learn more about healthcare communication and work for a hospital to help providers successfully share medical insight with patients.
